DIY Clock Upcycle – What You’ll Need:
- A thrifted platter (ceramic, metal, or wood all work!)
- Clock movement kit
- Drill with a diamond/metal bit (depending on your platter material)
- Painter’s tape (optional for drilling)
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Permanent marker or pencil
- Wall hook or plate hanger (for hanging)
Clock Upcycle – How To:
1. Choose Your Platter
Head to your local thrift store and browse the kitchenware section. Platters with unique shapes, bold patterns, or metallic finishes work especially well for this DIY Clock Upcycle because they double as functional art.

2. Mark the Center
Use a tape measure to find the exact center point of your platter. Use a marker to mark (don’t worry, it will come off during the drilling process!) —this is where your clock hands will sit.

3. Drill the Hole
Using the appropriate drill bit (most likely a diamond bit if your platter is glass or ceramic) for your platter’s material, carefully drill a hole where you marked the center. If your platter is ceramic or glass, you can place painter’s tape on the center back of the platter to help with chipping and clean up (full disclosure – I used to do this, but don’t anymore. I don’t find that it helps a ton, but some people swear by it!)
Also, if your plate is ceramic or glass like mine, be sure to use a spray bottle to keep the bit and surface of your platter wet (and cool) during the drilling process!
Once drilled, clean your platter from any ceramic/glass or other dust & debris.

4. Install the Clock Mechanism
Follow the instructions on your clock movement kit to attach the mechanism through the hole. The shaft should fit snugly. Then, place the clock hands on according to the directions. Pop in a battery and adjust the time accordingly.

5. Customize (Optional)
Add numbers, Roman numerals, or even hand-painted designs if you’d like to personalize your clock face. You can use adhesive decals for a clean, modern look—or go freehand for a rustic feel. I chose to leave numbers off of my clock entirely to really allow the platter to have it’s moment!
6. Hang It Up
Attach a plate hanger or wall hook to the back of your platter (my clock kit, and the one that’s linked for you, actually comes with wall hooks that slide on right behind the battery pack, which is super convenient). Find the perfect spot on your wall, & hang! And finally, enjoy your brand-new DIY Clock Upcycle masterpiece!
