Umbrella Door Swag – What You’ll Need:
- A large, sturdy umbrella – you want one that is classically shaped, with a point at the bottom
- Faux flowers with long stems (seasonal blooms like tulips, daisies, peonies, or lavender; I got most of mine from goodwill!)
- Ribbon or twine (for tying the umbrella)
- Scissors
- Zip tie or Command hook (for hanging)
- Floral Tape
- Wire cutters (for trimming flower stems)
Umbrella Door Swag – How To:
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before starting, gather all your supplies. You can find these materials at your local craft store or order them online. Choose faux florals that reflect the colors and vibes of spring—think bright pastels or cheerful, vibrant blooms.
Step 2: Cut & Tape Your Flower Stems
Make sure to cut any extra-long flower stems with wire cutters. Once cut, tape the bottoms with floral tape to ensure the wire is no longer sharp. We don’t want the wires to poke holes in the umbrella!

Step 3: Insert the Flowers
This is where the fun begins! Now, we’re going to insert the flowers into the umbrella. Simply take the long stems of your faux flowers and poke them into the open top of the umbrella. The stems should be inserted deep enough inside the umbrella so that they stay securely in place once tied. The tie you’ll add later will help hold them inside.
PRO TIP: Tie a loose string around the midpoint of your umbrella to help the flowers stay in the approximate place you want them as you insert them (just be sure you are inserting the stems past the point of the string inside the umbrella).

Flower Arrangement Tips:
- Begin with a few focal flowers (like larger blooms) towards the center
- Add some greenery and filler flowers (like smaller blossoms or sprigs) around the focal flowers to fill in the gaps and create a cascading effect.
- Arrange the flowers so that they “spill” out from the top of the umbrella in a natural, flowing manner.
If any flowers feel loose, you can use floral wire or twist ties to secure them to the umbrella’s frame for extra stability. But generally, the long stems should be enough to hold everything in place.
Step 4: Tie the Umbrella
Once your flowers are arranged to your liking, gather the middle of the umbrella (the same place you tied in Step 3) and tie it securely with ribbon. This tie will not only give the swag its finished look but will also help hold the flowers inside the umbrella. Your ribbon should be nice and tight. I prefer using wired ribbon so I can manipulate the bow tails to look extra pretty!

Step 5: Adjust the Flowers
Now that the swag is tied, take a step back and look at your arrangement. Make any final adjustments to the flowers, adding or moving stems as needed to ensure the flowers look natural and full.
Step 6: Hang the Swag
Now it’s time to hang your spring umbrella swag! You have a couple of options here:
- Using a Zip Tie (for Screen Doors): Thread the zip tie through the handle of the umbrella, and secure it around the metal portion of your screen door, as I did here.
- Using a Command Hook: That said, most of you will likely use a Command hook if you have a standard front door. Attach the hook to the middle of your door or frame, then hang the umbrella by its handle.
Step 7: Final Touches
After hanging the door swag, give everything one last inspection. Ensure that the flowers are cascading in the desired direction and adjust them to fill any empty spaces. If you’re using battery-operated fairy lights (see below!), you can carefully wrap them around the flowers for a soft, glowing effect.

Why This Spring Umbrella Door Swag is a Fun Alternative to a Classic Wreath:
- Unique & Eye-Catching: A spring umbrella swag is an unexpected yet beautiful focal point for your front door. It’s a great conversation starter and adds a whimsical, fresh twist to your spring decor.
- No Floral Foam Required: This swag is incredibly easy to make since you don’t need floral foam to secure your flowers. Long flower stems and a tie at the center are all you need to make it come together quickly.
- Customizable: Just like a wreath, you can tailor this swag to fit your personal style. Choose flowers that complement your home’s color scheme, or mix and match blooms for a more playful, colorful look.
- Seasonal & Reusable: Swap out the flowers each season to create a new look! You can use this umbrella for different holidays or just to celebrate the changing seasons.

Additional Tips for Customizing Your Swag:
- Incorporate Other Seasonal Elements: For a summer version, add some faux sunflowers or wildflowers. For autumn, you could swap in fall foliage, small pumpkins, or even some rustic burlap.
- String Lights: For an extra touch of magic, add battery-operated fairy lights around the flowers. This gives the swag a warm, glowing effect, especially in the evenings.
- Change the Bow: Try different ribbons or materials for the tie. A gingham bow gives it a farmhouse vibe, while a silk satin ribbon feels more elegant.

This adorable umbrella door swag is a delightful alternative to the traditional wreath, and it’s sure to bring a fresh, playful energy to your front porch this season. It’s simple to make, highly customizable, and can be swapped out as the seasons change. Plus, it’s the perfect way to showcase the beauty of spring flowers in a unique and unexpected way!
So, why stick to a classic wreath when you can make something this charming and creative? Enjoy crafting your spring swag, and let your front door be the talk of the neighborhood!
Let me know if you decide to give this a try! I’d love to hear how it turns out! 🌸
