Hello, friends!

I have had several people ask me for the recipe to the Spritz cookies I have posted so much, so I wanted to pop on and let y’al know how I make the delicious and GORGEOUS cookies!  They are very simple in terms of taste, but that’s why I love them – deliciously simple!  As for appearance, they are anything but!  You can be 100% creative with these cookies – make them any color you like, and a shape for any occasion – hearts, stars, trees, wreaths, they are all achievable!

What you’ll need:

  • manual (or electric) cookie press – the one my mom and I use is VINTAGE for sure, but you can find them online at places like Bed Bath & Beyond, Amazon, or even Etsy if you are feeling the vintage vibes!
  • Un-greased baking sheets
  • Hand mixer (or a countertop/stand mixer)
  • 3.5 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1.5 cups butter or margarine
  • .25 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon almond extract
  • Food coloring of your choice
  • sprinkles of your choice (optional but highly recommend)!

Steps to delicious cookies:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Stir together sifted all-purpose flour, salt and baking powder, set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter/margarine until softened. Add sugar and beat until fluffy. Add egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract and beat well.
  4. Gradually add your flour/baking powder mixture and beat until well mixed.TIP:  Do NOT chill dough or it will not pass through your cookie press!
  5. Let your creative side out!  Separate your dough out into portions depending on how many colors you want to tint.  We usually do 2 – 3 colors, and sometimes we leave a section without any food coloring at all, as it gives some nice variation when you mix it with a color – Put your portioned out dough into separate small bowls, and use your food coloring to tint each portion to your desired shade.
  6. If you want cookies that are one color, take that portion of dough and roll it into a log type shape (this is optional, it just helps it go into the cookie press more easily)
  7. If you want cookie that are two or three colors, roll skinnier logs of each color, and then put and roll together the two or three colors into one larger log shape.  You’ll put this log into the cookie press.TIP: Make sure you read the directions on your cookie press and use it accordingly.  There are usually a couple of settings to adjust how much dough comes out, and of course, you switch out the circular plate at the bottom depending on what shape you want.
  8. Use the lever on your cookie press to press out your cookies onto an un-greased baking sheet.TIP:  The first couple of clicks on the lever probably wont push out a cookie – it takes a couple of times – you’ll also want to be consistent with the force you use on the lever, as it WILL affect the amount of dough that comes out, and thus the size of your cookie.  The more consistent you are with the method of using your cookie press, the more uniform your cookies will look!
  9. Decorate with sprinkles!
  10. Bake in 400 degree oven for 7-8 minutes.  Keep an eye on them towards the end – you want to pull them out right before they get brown on the top!
  11. Remove and cool.
  12. ENJOY! (And show them off of course!)

If you make a batch, I would love to know how they turn out! Let me know in the comments below!

XO, Ana
