DIY Pinecone Ornaments – What You Need:
- Unopened pinecones (enough to create your desired number of ornaments)
- White spray paint (for a base coat)
- Acrylic paint (choose your favorite colors along with white to achieve that ombre effect_
- Small Paintbrushes
- Krylon Triple Coat Glaze (or any clear sealant)
- Small eye hooks
- Pliers
- Twine or ribbon (for hanging)
- Disposable gloves (optional, but recommended for clean hands)
- Newspaper or a drop cloth (to protect your workspace)
DIY Pinecone Ornaments – How To:
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
Set up your workspace outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Lay down newspapers or a drop cloth to catch any paint drips. Gather all your materials so everything is within reach.
Step 2: Spray Paint the Pinecones
- Start with Clean Pinecones: Make sure your pinecones are free of dust and debris. If needed, rinse them with water and let them dry completely for a couple of days.
- Apply the White Spray Paint: Hold the spray paint can about 6-12 inches away from the pinecones. Spray evenly, rotating the pinecone to cover all sides. The white base will help the ombre colors pop.
- Let Them Dry: Allow the pinecones to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 3: Create the Ombre Effect
- Select Your Colors: Choose a gradient of colors for your ombre effect. For example, you might pick shades of blue that transition from light to dark. If you only have one color blue, just mix 3-4 versions of the color using white paint to achieve that ombre look.
- Paint the Ombre Effect:
- Start with the Darkes Color: Using a small paintbrush, apply the darkes color at the tip of the pinecone.
- Blend Downward: Gradually blend the next color down, lightly overlapping the previous color to create a smooth transition. The key is to work with your paint while it’s still WET. This helps you create a more blended and seamless ombre look.
- Continue Adding Colors: Work your way down the pinecone, transitioning to the the lightes shade about halfway down the cone, which you then blend into white. Don’t worry about making it perfect; the organic shape of the pinecone adds to the charm.
- Let the Paint Dry: Allow the painted pinecones to dry completely.
Step 4: Seal the Ornaments
- Apply Krylon Triple Coat Glaze: Once the paint is dry, spray a coat of Krylon Triple Coat Glaze over the entire pinecone. This is my go to sealer for this project because it creates a very shiny, glass like appearance. Sealing your pinecones will protect your paint long term so these will last for years to come.
- Dry Again: Let the clear spray paint dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 5: Add a Hook to Hang Loop
- Attach Eye Hook: Using pliers, attach a small eye hook to the top of each pinecone. The pliers will help you stabilize the hook as you screw it into the cone. (Alternatively, you can forgo this step and just use your obmre pinecones as vase filler instead – also beautiful!)
- Cut Twine or Ribbon: Cut a piece of twine or ribbon about 8-10 inches long.
- Attach the Loop: Thread the twine or ribbon through the eyehook, tying a secure knot. This will allow you to hang your new ornaments on your tree or elsewhere in your home.
Step 6: Display Your Ombre Pinecone Ornaments
Now that your ornaments are complete, hang them on your tree, display them in a festive bowl, or gift them to friends and family. Enjoy the unique touch they bring to your holiday decor!
