As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, it’s the perfect time to embrace the cozy vibes of fall. One of my favorite ways to decorate for the season this year was by creating a fall pallet sign for my front porch – and it was FREE. Today, I’m excited to share a step-by-step tutorial on how to make your own pallet sign, complete with seasonal phrases like “Hot Cider” and “Pumpkin Patch.” Plus, I’ll throw in some ideas for Christmas too!

Pallet Sign: What You’ll Need
Materials:
- Pallet Wood: You can find pallets at local hardware stores, warehouses, or even online marketplaces like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Check with local businesses, too; many are willing to give away pallets for free!
- Acyrlic Paint: I always just use what I have on hand – no need for expensive paint here
- Paintbrushes in various sizes
- Stencils or Vinyl Letters (optional)
- Outdoor Sealer (optional)
- Sandpaper
Pallet Sign: How To
Step 1: Gather Your Pallet
Start by finding a pallet that’s in decent condition. Look for one that’s not too weathered or broken. Out pallet came from a delivery back when we built our home, so this project was free!
Step 2: Sand and Prep
Once you have your pallet, sand down any rough edges to avoid splinters. This step is crucial if you have little ones running around! Wipe it clean to remove any dust.
Step 3: Plan Your Design
Before you start painting, sketch out your design on paper. I chose phrases like “Hot Cider” and “Pumpkin Patch” with arrows pointing in different directions, similar to signs you might see at a Harvest Festival. Get creative! Here are some additional ideas for words:
- “Apple Orchard”
- “Harvest Feast”
- “Spooky Corn Maze”
- “Hayrides”
- “U Pick Pumpkins”
- “Hot Cholate”
- “Pumpkin Pie”
- “Country Kitchen”
Step 4: Paint Your Background
Choose a base color (or colors) for your pallet sign. I chose 4 different colors for each “rung” of my pallet. Use a paintbrush or foam roller, or create a chippy effect like I did by loading paint onto a small block of wood and then dragging it across your pallet. Allow the paint to dry completely.
Step 5: Add Your Words and Arrows
Once the base coat is dry, it’s time to add your phrases. You can use stencils for a clean look or freehand for a more rustic vibe (I chose the latter). For arrows, simply paint them on in different directions.
I also added cute little images to each rung of my sign – an apple, cider cup, pumpkin, and ghost!
Step 6: Seal Your Sign (Optional)
If you want your sign to withstand the elements, especially if it’s going outside, apply an outdoor sealer. This step helps protect your creation from rain and wind. That said – my sign is outside and I chose not to seal it – mostly because I actually HOPE the sign weathers a bit. I like things to look a bit more rustic and old – it adds character!
Step 7: Find the Perfect Spot
Now that your sign is ready, it’s time to display it! Find a perfect spot on your front porch or in your yard. It could be next to your pumpkin display or near a cozy seating area with some fall throws. Ours is next to our driveway, welcoming visitors (and us) when they drive in!
Bonus: Think Ahead to Christmas!
Once you’ve mastered the fall pallet sign, consider creating a winter-themed version! You could use phrases like:
- “Hot Cocoa”
- “Santa’s Workshop”
- “Winter Wonderland”
- “Sleigh Rides”
- “North Pole”
- “Candy Cane Lane,” etc.
