how to build a tv frame

Now that we are settled into our new home at Sunrise Valley Farm and I’ve settled into being a mama to our sweet baby boy (who is now 4 months old – time sure does fly!), I’ve finally had a bit of time to tackle some DIY projects. Needless to say, I’ve missed being creative!

To dip my toes back into the DIY pool, I decided to start small and build a TV frame for our two Samsung Frame TVs, one in our living room and the other in our primary bedroom.

This project is incredibly easy if you have the actual Samsung Frame TV, but even if you don’t, with a few modifications you can create a similar look with nearly any flatscreen television!

DIY TV Frame – What You’ll Need:

DIY TV Frame – How To:

Step 1: Measure your TV. For the Samsung Frame TV, be sure to measure the INSIDE edge of the black bevel that surrounds the outside of the TV – you want to make sure your frame covers this up to look the most realistic.

Step 2: Choose your molding. You can go as simple or intricate as you’d like. Be sure to purchase the correct length of molding based on your measurements from step 1.

Step 3: Using your miter saw, cut a 45 degree angle at the very end of one piece of molding, ensuring the 45 degree angle points outward from whichever side of the molding you’d like to be the INSDIE of your frame. Now, measure your TV length out on that piece of molding, always measuring from the INSIDE of the frame, and make a mark. Cut a 45 degree angle in the opposite direction, stemming out from the mark you just made.

Step 4: Repeat step 3 for the second length piece, and both height pieces of your frame.

Step 5: Sand down any jagged edges of your molding pieces.

Step 6: Arrange your frame upside down on a flat surface. Using small screws (ensure they are short enough that they will not go through your molding), secure a flat L bracket to each corner so that each molding piece is attached to it’s perpendicular neighbor.

Step 7: Cut two strips of your elastic band that are about 2″ longer than the height of your frame. Using small screws (again, short enough that that won’t go through your frame), attach each elastic strip about 4″ inside the length of the frame (i.e. these strips will run VERTICAL and be parallel to the two short sides of the frame). Once secured on one end, pull the elastic taut, and screw the second side in. You can also use a staple gun instead of screws if you prefer.

Step 8: Test your frame out on your TV before you go any further. Hopefully, it’s a perfect fit! But if it’s not, it’s much easier to quick;y disassemble it and make any necessary adjustments now than to wait until the end!

Step 9: Remove your frame from your TV and lay on a flat surface. Use wood filler to fill any gaps in the the corners of your frame. Allow to dry.

Step 10: Sand down the wood filler once dry as needed. Dust off with a tack cloth.

Step 11: Paint your frame however you like. I used basic acrylic paint, starting with a black base coat, followed by gold for a more antiqued look. You could also choose to spray paint your frame for a quicker process. Allow to dry.

Step 12: Place your frame back on your TV, and voila! You’re done! With a Samsung Fram TV, you won’t have to worry about the sensor being blocked, as it is bluetooth based, rather than infrared. On other types of flatscreen TV’s, you may need to drill a small hole or make a small cut to expose your sensor, so just keep that in mind!

Doesn’t it make all the difference?! If you have any questions, feel free to drop them in the comments below! And as always, happy DIYing!
